How we know these rooms are not just tricks
This page is for a grown-up who wants the names. A child can skip it. The rooms still come first.
- What changed?Documented
A quiet scene can flicker. One thing can leave. You can miss it even though it was in view.
Rensink, O'Regan, and Clark, 1997, on change blindness. Simons and Levin, 1997, on related misses in ordinary conversation.
Missing the pear is not a grade. The interruption and where attention sat both matter. Why some changes are easier to miss is still open.
- What were you watching?Documented
Watch the fish. A heron can arrive in view and still go unnoticed.
Mack and Rock named inattentional blindness. A later, famous demonstration with a person in a gorilla suit is related. It is not copied here.
The pond is our own picture. Consensus: an unexpected event can be missed when attention is occupied. How much processing happens without notice is still open.
- Two things can be hereDocumented
One set of marks can be organized as a cup, or as two faces. The paper is not redrawn.
Rubin, 1915, face and goblet. Later work calls this bistable perception.
Both readings are supported by the same edges. We do not say the brain invents the picture out of nothing. Why a switch happens at a particular moment is still open.
- The color next doorDocumented
Two inner squares are the same gray. Neighbors can still change how they appear.
Chevreul described simultaneous contrast in the nineteenth century. Later color-appearance and color-constancy work is still active.
The paints are not secretly different. Light, surface, and neighborhood are three different ideas. Every weighting the visual system uses is not finished science.
- The spot you don't seeMeasured
There is a place on the retina that cannot catch light. Everyday seeing still does not feel like a hole.
Edme Mariotte demonstrated the blind spot in the 1660s. The place is the optic disc, where the optic nerve leaves.
The anatomy is measured. Why experience does not contain an obvious hole is not settled by one slogan about filling in.
- Did you remember that?Current consensus
A hallway can leave. What you report later is not a photograph of the whole picture.
Bartlett, 1932, described remembering as reconstruction.
I do not remember is an honest answer. Attention and expectation both contribute. Every path from a glance to a later report is still open.
- Still openWe do not know yet
Noticing, attention, and awareness are related. They are not proven to be the same thing.
A complete map of the eye would still leave the question of what seeing is like from the inside.
This house does not pretend a children's room has solved consciousness.
We did not copy a famous proprietary demonstration. Where a picture is ours, it is ours. Named work is the lineage, not a license to paste someone else's experiment.
